The
Golf program offers many opportunities for people with
disabilities. Combining physical, intellectual and social
aspects, golf enriches participant's lives in many ways.
On
the physical side, participants are taught stretching
techniques to warm up for the game. Walking, placing the golf
ball on the tee, and hitting the ball all add to the physical
fitness of the golfers. Putting and driving range practice
uses different muscles, increasing overall muscle tone. The
physical aspects of the game provide a challenge while not
being overly rigorous, and start the participant on the way to
a healthier body.
The intellectual side of the game gives a range of challenges
that prepares participants to better handle life situations
they encounter. The
"go for it" attitude of a drive and the
concentration of a putt both correspond to situations when
participants need these mental states in life. The etiquette
of golf helps to teach the life lessons of courtesy, fairness,
and respect. These aspects of the game help to improve the
lives of both participants and volunteers.
Particularly appealing in the golf program is the obvious
progression in ability of the golfers. A participant may start
the first week only driving the ball 15 feet but soon realize
their improvement and are driving the ball 50 yards. The
progress gives participants a sense of pride and encourages
them to strive for more.
As
all golfers know, the social aspects of the game are one of
its strengths! Eagle Mount Golf Program is no different.
Participants enjoy the camaraderie that develops from spending
time with each other, volunteers, and the course pros.
